Product Design offers a unique and forward thinking course that affords the opportunity for students to build upon skills from GCSE Design and Technology. Students will develop the capacity to design and make products and to appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing. Cultural visits to exhibitions and shows will enhance students’ study and links with industry are made through live project briefs.

COURSE OUTLINE

AS Examinations
Unit 1: Materials, Components and Application

Candidates are required to complete a 2 hour written examination paper. 50% of AS (25% of A level).

Unit 2: Learning Through Designing & Making
This is a design-and-make unit, where knowledge of the AS subject content is applied to the design and making of the candidates’ own projects. Five criteria are produced for assessment: Investigation and Clarification of Problems, Development of Design Proposal Making/ Modelling, Evaluation and Testing. 50% of AS (25% of A level).

A2 Content
Unit 3: Design & Manufacture

Exam on the subject content covered by candidates at A2 level. Candidates are required to complete a 2 hour written examination paper. 25% of A level.

Unit 4: Designing & Making Practice
This is a design-and-make unit where knowledge of subject content is applied to the design and manufacture of candidates’ own projects, based on similar criteria to AS.

PROGRESSIONAL/CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

A level Product Design provides an excellent basis for progression into a wide range of design disciplines such as Architecture, Product Design, Interior Design, Theatre Design, Engineering, Fashion Design and Marketing, Graphics, Buying and Merchandising, Illustration and Design Consultancy.
